There are too many threads out there with information on this map or the other map. Here is a core thread to post all information for all maps. With information on Halo 3 coming in steadily, it would be a good idea (I thought), not to clog the forum with multiple threads on the multiplayer maps. I'm closing the other threads and this one will serve as the final place of rest for discussion on the upcoming maps. To start everyone off, here are some new scans of Elongation and Gemini that have found their way online:

You are the wind beneath my wings.

How strangely erotic.

Seriously, the obvious thing to take from this is that sniping will be a very mobile to be effective. There are enough ridges and dips that it will keep cover up, and that has me happy. Happy. HAPPY.

Sick Drink.... not only does Backwash look hawt, but we got glimpses of how decent players will play these maps, not the Bungie SMG pwnzors crew... for those of you who know h00ters, be afraid, be very afraid, because Elongation features at least two plasma pistols.

When someone customizes to human weapons only, I usually here a yelp from h00ters11. Speaking of the h00termaster, he'll have another avatar sometime tonight and will have it through Saturday. If you have a problem with the real hooters, you may want to avoid his posts...

As you probably know, Synide, Sundance, Ted, Mike, and I all headed out to E3 last week to see what was up with these new fangled, fancy-pants consoles. While we were there we also had a chance to sit down with the 5 remaining maps being released for Halo 2 on the Halo 2 Map Pack (release date now July 5th). While we did get to play on the E3 floor Synide and I got a chance to spend a little more QT with each of the new maps at Dean's Plasma Fiesta Friday night. Last year we were able to attend Dean's party and had an absolute blast. This year I needed oxygen supplement to sustain me through the good times. I won't go into the party details (or even E3 for that matter) but if you would like to know more, head over to Synide's blog (Synide.net) and watch the ice cream eating contest or watch me get owned at We <3 Katamari. I will however, discuss the maps hitting your Xbox HDD this July.

Elongation - I never did actually see this level until we got to the party and thanks to Ske7ch I actually got to run through it several times to see some of the changes made from Halo 1's Longest. First, the map is still symmetrical from what I could tell and more or less has the same basic geometry. I'll break down some difference for you.

The first major difference is the bases. They are still that same big open room you remember from Halo 1, but this time they contain a ton of boxes and creates that obstruct your view. Should make for some interesting CTF interceptions when someone is trying to cap, and provide some great places to hide. There are still ramps in their original location (and are still hallways of carnage that they were in the original) but the 4 ramps make the top a little bit more accessible and a little less dominating. Not to mention that the endless stream of boxes provide an extremely easy way to quick-jump to the top.

The other major difference is the center wall's integrity. There are now quite a lot of places for you to jump to the other side including the very middle of the top where the over shield and active camo sat in the original (they are no longer there). This is probably to offset the fact that the flag carrier can get down the hallway pretty quickly on the moving belts.

All-in-all I think that the majority of people will like or love Elongation, but not because it is like Longest, but because it's just a fun map to play. Generally speaking, I disagree with Bungie's recommended numbers for each map or what they consider medium or large. However, I have to agree with Ske7ch this time that this map is REALLY small and will make a fantastic 2v2 CTF match. Not to say it won't work well for 4v4 either, but I think you will find that objective game types work really well, and strait up slayer will bring back days of yore where you spawn two feet from your opponent.

Backwash - Just about the fugliest map I have ever played on. Think 343 Guilty Spark from Halo 1 with a nuclear blast that has gone off and made the fog mutate into Zombie Fart. Also, for some reason there are glow-bugs are in the Zombie Fart. Seriously, this map is gross, but it's unbelievably sweet for game play. You can't see very far at all and makes an awesome addition to the Zombie game type as we found at the party. It is symmetrical with two bases on either end and the 343 Guilty Spark building in the middle. This building is two stories and is also the home of the oddball, neutral bomb, and neutral flag and should be an awesome addition to those game types.

After reading a few other reviews of the Map Pack I think the biggest thing that writers are failing to mention is the trees. They are everywhere and tend to make some awesome SMG battles, and very difficult and skill driven Battle Rifle moments. This isn't just another open map, there are tons of places to hide and sneak up on your enemy or out with the flag. Personally, as ugly as this map might be, I think it could be the best 4v4 CTF map out there in July.

Gemini - Oh, Gemini. I can't wait to hear the griping about this map. First, it is pretty interesting to note that this map is based off of the Marathon map "Duality". Second thing to note about this map is -- not a lot of people I talked to liked this map. Synide didn't care for it, Wu didn't care for it, EGM hates it, I on the other hand, didn't really mind it.

It's kind of a whore map where you can hide a lot of places with the snipe or sword and just go to town while your opponents are spawning in one of the side rooms just to run back and get it from you again.

The map seems like it would make a fantastic arena FFA map if it just wasn't for all the side garbage tacked on that all lead to choke points that are just too large to actually choke all the players. What you end up with is a lot of side battles that take place in the side halls with players spawning and hoping to run into a weakened player or two to steal a kill.

Where the level lacks in playability it rocks in aesthetics. There is a huge Profit statue in the middle of the great hall, and a gorgeously lit tree that you can hide and get into from a teleporter above. Unfortunately, with all the awesome architecture, there just isn't enough lighting to see it all. I am just hoping that once the map pack releases and we can spend some more time with Gemini we find the game type that is just right for it.

Terminal - This was the one map I couldn't track down a great screen shot of. I am sure Bungie will release plenty before the Map Pack releases, but I will do my best to describe it. This map was really made for offense /defense games so I will describe it initially in those terms. Think of the map as three major elements. An auto body shop, a parking garage and a train station. The auto body shop is where the offense team spawns. Dead ahead you are looking down a field where the monorail's support beams are placed, a road to your left, and the parking garage to your right. There is a Hog and Ghost that spawn there for the offense to take and try to get to the other base.

In the train station the defense team spawns and has access to a ghost and Wraith. There are about 3 different ways into the base where the flag is held (tracks /road, parking garage, and from the ground around back where the wraith originally spawns) but at the same time it is fairly closed off to make for some awesome tactical games. As you probably know there are two monorail tracks that run the length of the level with trains randomly making an appearance going either way. The trains are obviously the highlight of the board and are a lot of fun to play with.

First thing you should know is, these trains are FAST. If you see that they are coming you do have time to get out of the way, but if not, your probably toast. We played a static hill KOTH once on Terminal and I will give you one guess where the hill was. Yup, you guessed it, right in the middle of the tracks in the train station. So many times I would find myself running for the hill and start shooting at the other team that was getting time. Just as I got close "Whoooooosh" and he was just gone, blasted by the train. It was always hilarious and the room would explode with, "Did you see that?! I just got TRAINED!". Several times Synide found that even though his death was inevitable, setting up the gause hog on the tracks would buy us some time, only to be brought to a fiery doom by the train. "Let's do that again!!" some kid on our team would scream. It was hilarious.

I did get a cool side note by Ske7ch at the party or at the show. He mentioned that the train originally was going to be "out of control" and you could hear screaming passengers on it as it zoomed by. "I think they thought by the 100th time you saw the train the screaming would get old", Sketch noted. I totally agree.

Relic - I am fairly conflicted about this map. To be perfectly honest I think it is the best new map in the pack of five. However, like Zanzibar, I could see a lot of people thinking it would get "old". To know where I am coming from opinion wise, I still like Zanzibar with a lot of games. Assault and 1 Flag CTF are, in my humble opinion, a lot of fun to play with my friends. That being said, I could see why a lot of pro's can't stand it. So, Relic I think might fall into that same Zazibar-ish category, but it will take a few weeks to find where everyone stands on it.

Ok, so onto the map design. It is, as mentioned, an assault based map. The assaulting team starts on the beach and can actually see the flag from where they spawn. However, you can't reach the flag unless you go to the back of the base and work your way back to the front. Once you actually get to the flag you can simply grab and toss it off and you are 90% of the way home. The real battle is just getting to the flag. On the right from the assaulting team's base there is a sniper's outpost, and to the left, a rocket launcher. The rocket launcher is truly about the same distance from each team. The assaulting team has a human sniper close to the "drop zone" while the defending team has a covey sniper near the sniper's lift.

One of the interactive parts of the map is the unlockable teleporter. The teleporter is very close to the "drop zone" and can be useful to either team. After playing the map around 10 times I found that it seemed useful to initially defend and try to keep the porter locked as the defending team. However, if the assaulting team got the flag and you could be quick, you could actually use it to your advantage to get to the beach and try and defend the flag one last time. This strat actually saved us once when the other team had let the clock run low and simply couldn't contest it in time while it literally sat on the cap point.

This map may end up being good for only a couple game types, but for those game types it was a whole lot of fun. Finally, H2 has a "storming the beach" type map that rocks. I mean, what great FPS doesn't?! :)

It's funny because I read that Gemini is a remake of a Marathon map just like Foundation's a remake. Interestingly enough, Gemini is getting the worst reviews of all the new maps.

Nice work Blaze... my preferences for the new maps: 1- Backwash- aww skeet skeet 2- Elongation- will be fun for anything with 8 players or less, and may be fun for crazy shitlike snipers only with 16 people 3- Relic- looks like the better of the two 1-flag CTF maps, but we'll see 4- Terminal- I'm not sure that I'll like this one all that much, but at least I can play on the train tracks when Ivan forces me to play big team battle 5- Gemini- I don't have high hopes, however, I also don't trust the SMGournalists and their ability to judge maps, so this one may move up the list just because it is small. However, it doesn't seem to have a very multi-level aspect to it.
