I guess my argument is that there really is no reason not to have awesome gameplay with a fantastic story. Leaving stuff unexplained, especially big stuff like I mentioned before, doesn't exactly make it that much more immersive either. Look at L4D. Nothing is explained as to why it happened, and the story hurts because of it. Not memorable at all. It just seems like a very poor choice not to do so.

You're joking, right?

Man, I was hooping and hollering when she bit the dust.

More games need to make a habit of offing annoying characters. It's really quite satisfying.

New tag for Drew: This man has no soul :P Also, FF7 is so old that I don't care as much about this instance, but we need to be really careful about what does and doesn't need spoiler tags.

Yeah, I say the cutoff is something like five years. That's the entire lifetime of the '360. If you haven't played it by now you aren't going to play it, and don't try to lie to yourself about it.

Anyway, how about that playlist update on Tuesday. Apparently lots of bug fixes, so very excite. They better be fucking lifting the rank cap, especially seeing as they're nerfing Gruntpocalypse credits even more than they already have, and the fact that it takes 20,000,000 goddamn credits to hit max rank, and the fact that the more you play the less credits you earn.

Christ.

I'm too lazy to read the weekly update. You say it's bug fixes, but that suggests a patch, not a playlist update. Unless it's stuff like Gruntpocalypse or completely on their end.

It's both. Playlist update and patch update. "We?ve already promised a big mid-month Matchmaking deployment, but Jeremiah and the core team responsible for Reach?s playlist management have decided to fast track some of the ?easier? implementations and break October?s update into two distinct and meaty halves. The first round of playlist updates, barring any unforeseen shenanigans, will go live on Tuesday of next week. Alongside the major alterations listed above, a myriad of much needed fixes and tweaks to the experience will also go into effect on Tuesday, including a metric ton of small, but annoying bugs and gameplay issues that we?ve identified and earmarked for eradication. As these updates go live, Jeremiah will publish the full details to our Optimatch forum so you can pore over the subtle nuances of each individual change."

That will never be fixed, seeing as it's a side-effect of the AA method that Reach utilizes.

Anti Aliasing. To summarize, it's a way to remove jagged lines at the edge of objects from the screen by softening them up. Look at the walls of Zealot sometime and you'll see a lot of jagged lines. Some games use motion blur, like Reach and Crysis. In addition to smoothing out jagged lines, motion blur is often used in Crysis to smooth out the gameplay, because people were getting ~24 frames per second. Without motion blur, that kind of fps is unplayable. In Reach, I think it helps smooth things out if the framerate dips a little bit below 30. In movies, 24 fps is the standard and generally uses motion blur to make things appear more fluid. Here's my understanding of the situation in Reach. The "ghosting" you're getting is a result when the framerate drops drastically, which has to do with the way motion blur works. When drawing motion blur, you actually draw not only your object, but also a blur to simulate motion. When the framerate dips very far below 30 fps, what's drawn is closer and closer to still images. As a result, the extra blur that was drawn becomes increasingly more noticeable. Feel free to correct me if this info isn't accurate in any way.

The ghosting in Reach has nothing to do with motion blur.

Here's the post I made about anti-aliasing, and the different kinds.

http://forums.ascend...p...t&p=9242591

Reach uses a hybrid system, called temporal anti-aliasing, which actually draws the image as two frames with a minor time delay between the two (on the order of maybe one or two ms) and then overlays and displaces the two very slightly, which gives the illusion of smoother edges.

This means that ghosting is always going to be present, because that's exactly what the game is doing, creating ghosting to present the illusion of a smoother image. It's not perfect, but it's much cheaper than MSAA and produces similar results, with the one downside obviously being the horrendous ghosting that sometimes occurs as a side-effect.

Motion-blur is a completely separate system and is done after the scene has already been drawn. It's merely a post-processing effect.

Hey Drew, in case you didn't know, even if you reach the level cap you will still contribute to the next levels behind the scenes. So when the level cap is lifted, you could potentially skip a couple of ranks depending on how much you've been playing.

Yeah, would've been sweet if they'd specified when they actually made the cap in the first place, because I haven't been playing at all since I hit the cap - commendations are a one-time boost. Thanks for clarifying so soon Bungie, it's really appreciated, I mean, what's a whole week of dancing around the issue, right?

Even then, he doesn't even sound quite sure of what he's talking about.

Re: the level cap - it's not being raised today (as you have already surmised) but it will get raised in the not too distant future. We'll have more to say on that soon including the criteria that will trigger the global cap raise.

In the meantime, fun fact: Even if you legitimately hit the current cR/level cap, you're actually still earning towards your next rank behind the scenes. So, when that cap is finally lifted, you can potentially catapult ahead with earnings you've already banked.

So... I might be a couple ranks ahead? Are only certain types of credit gains counted?

What the fuck.

You know I really wish they would tone down the night vision. Honestly it's a little ridiculous at this point, for one reason alone: night vision does not work during the day. It should be much more like visor mode which got overexposed during the day, and which itself wasn't even true night vision, so if anything only visor mode should work during the day, but for whatever reason it's the other way around. I just get frustrated about night vision because it actually aids in combat by highlighting enemies, vehicles, and usable objects slightly, and since it doesn't obscure your vision at all during the day, I use it to aid my combat performance. But then I don't feel like I'm getting the full experience, since it loses all color and just becomes tinted green. An update to fix this, if they could do that, would be cool. It's just a little TOO helpful, and takes away from the full experience...

Wrong thread?

But I have a crazy solution to your problem.

Don't use it during the day.

Outrageous, I know.

Nightvision shouldn't be in multiplayer. At all, especially when it outlines other players. How did Bungie, who've created some of the best multiplayer FPS's I've ever seen, manage to screw this up so bad? Oh wait...
