So Tuesday I text message Jeremy that I would be going on a massive playing binge that night since I wasn't scheduled to work the following day. I get home, turn on my 360 like usual, log into xbox live and I start scrolling through my friends list when it freezes. I haven't had any problems with my 360 since launch except for one glitch where it freezes only when I compose a message and then go into a checklist in order to select all the recipients for my message. At times I would feel the menu lag as I would quickly scroll through any menu especially the friends list. Since it wasn't a big deal I simply avoided sending messages to multiple friends, I figured yesterday that when it froze it was a result of me scrolling viciously through my friends list. I tried power cycling the 360 and it would take a lot longer for my TV to show anything, it would then start the boot animation and freeze right in the middle of the spinning logo. I tried a few more times and all I would get were the THREE RED LIGHTS of death. I talked to tech support over the phone, they had me remove all the cables and HDD, plug everything back in except for the HDD and then it booted into the dashboard only to freeze within the first minute. After that it's been the three red lights every time except for about two times I tried it when it actually started to load a game only to freeze during the publisher and developer logos.
I tried everything in order to fix my 360. I googled the three red lights issue, and learned a lot about the error codes. Just for your reference two red lights mean overheating, three red lights means hardware failure, and four red lights indicates a missing disconnected a/v cable. I learned that you can get the three red lights if the power supply is plugged into a bad power source such as a cheap surge protector or a strip with too many other items plugged in. Obviously I tried unplugging everything except for the tv and 360 and nothing changed. I attempted to plug my 360 into a different room where there's no electronics and also nothing. I was really pissed.
I have to say so far the MS customer service has been great. I received my prepaid box early in the morning yesterday (Thu) at work, and I dropped off my 360 at the UPS store at 6:30 PM. Yes I'm very happy that they're using UPS or at least my repair order used UPS, hopefully they'll send it back via UPS because of all the missing or delayed 360 DHL horror stories. I just checked the tracking number right now and it's already in Texas. Hopefully they fix it today Fri and ship it out same day like they did with Soktos' defective 360. If they ship it out later today, I'll receive it tomorrow which would be sweet.
I was told by the tech support rep that I needed to send my 360 in with the HDD attached. Soktos sent his 360 for repair without the HDD, they sent him a brand new 360 unit and not his defective one along with a new HDD. The same thing happened with another guy Limafoxtrot. In any case, I probably won't get a new HDD which is alright as long as I get a perfectly functional 360 which is free of freezing during vigorous messaging and scrolling.
