I have a question. I have wondered for a while and after having read Road To Voi my suspicion is still present. If supposedly the rings can only be fired from the Ark. Then how come there was no mention of the Ark in Halo 1. They had no problems attempting to fire the rings then, why do they need the Ark now? Is it because the rings are in "Stand-by" mode? Or maybe because one ring is missing, so the Ark must be used? Or maybe they "thought" they could fire the rings but now know the Ark is needed? Or do we even know the answer? This is my first post as being a part of this site and i'm excited to get into some pretty vicious conversations! Good day NJ x Falk0r

It's an interesting question, Falk0r. There certainly are signs that Bungie had a direction they intended in Halo 1 that is being carried out even now, including the Cortana letters (and their reinclusion in the H3 trailer). See our discussion in that thread for an interesting example of Bungie "planting the seeds" for Halo 2 and 3. I'd trade my chance to play Halo 3 to get my hands on that blasted Story Bible and find out for myself, that's for sure. I was also under the impression that the Ark was a control station from which the rings could be fired, but not necessarily the only firing mechanism (which would be a pretty simple answer to your question). I could, of course, be way off. Right now, I don't have a whole lot to add besides that, but welcome, I think you'll fit in well here, if you keep asking interesting questions like this one. I, for one, think you might be the first new member we've had in a while who's actually even played Halo 1. Welcome aboard.

in the article, the suggestion isn't that the ark was always the only place the rings could fire from but that now, after bringing them "online" at the end of halo 2, the rings can only fire from a remote location (in this case the ark). had miranda not yanked the index from the control center's computer, there would be no halo 3 worth writing about. the covenant and the chief would have arrived at a population-less earth once they exited the safety of slipspace.

i think the more interesting question would be: why did cortana not destroy the ring with in amber clad's fusion reactors once the ring began to fire?

Interesting... God damn, Voc, I must have been too busy bitching about the ending to even entertain or consider thoughts about its impact on the story (beyond ending it too soon). Very interesting...

Are there members of this forum who haven't played halo 1? Are they even among those who get their panties stuffed tightly about their genitals when someone disses halo 2? Alright, then, show yourself! Come out from behind your stack of old lady porn and admit you've never played the superior Halo.

I think the Halo 2 fans in this forum have sort of become tired with dealing with the same negativity toward a good game over and over again. I doubt they're interested in entertaining another tug of war about who likes what and who thinks "what" is shit. We all know about the line in the sand; we all know where each of us stands.

To answer the title: Practically speaking, Halo 1 more than likely didn't include any comment about the Ark because Bungie wanted to tell the story of Halo in the most concise and efficient way. They did know if it was going to be the last time they could tell the story and that translated into a simplistically-scribed, played-out concept that came very short of being a compelling story.

Thankfully, it was fun enough to deem a sequel which ended up having a decidedly more elaborate and deep fiction. In that story, they thought it best to introduce the concept of the Ark and later (in Halo 3), the understanding of shield worlds and the two-fold plan of the Forerunners.

I think it's quite debatable that the Halo 2 story is a step up. If it were a comic book, a movie, or a regular novel, I'd agree wholeheartedly. But video game stories are a different beast. And Halo 2's is not effective (note: OPINION, but your statement was too) for a number of reasons: 1) It sets up situations that are blatantly not fun (lots of Flood levels), completely unnecessarily- nothing about Halo 1's ending dictated that Halo 2 had to have such a focus on the Flood. 2) Forget denouement, that shit doesn't even have a conclusion... 3) Remember that quote by Jason Jones about "we don't have 10 minutes of cut scenes for every 20 minutes of gameplay" (note: BOTCHED QUOTE), yeah, that's a blatant lie.

'Cuse... Dude, you do realize that the series is called "Halo." Because there are these giant fucking rings. Whose only purpose is to destroy all life in the universe. Because of the parasitic creatures called "Flood." Which the Halo contains... The Halo is a religious object to The Covenant. Think about it...

This is an Ark-related speculation that the more whiny among us might not appreciate seeing, even though it's a wild-ass guess:

Thus it is inevitable that bunny-rabbits will be the sole surviving life-form in the universe.

He's not at all. I've seen him ask before what the Bars were for. I though then that he was joking. It appears he is not.
