Aye, it's a pun. "Reach Falls" "Fall 2010" Can't find it right now, but I've seen two interviews where Bungie guys have said "fall 2010" for the timeline. Which makes sense, given the Beta in spring.

If you haven't watched the whole 30 min ODST demo by Joe Staten on IGN, drop everything and watch it now. I was blown away. At one point he opens up the map of New Mombasa, and you can see how big and open the world is. It looks huge and there will sure be a lot of exploring!

Yeah, looks huge. I did this yesterday, and it's pretty crappy, but here's part of the map he scrolls over.

Staten skips ahead because the objective is nearly a kilometer away (just under according to the HUD), and that was not all of the way accross the map. The hub world is much, much larger and more complex than I thought it would be.

Edit: I went back and fixed up and expanded the image.

We don't know how long they have been working on it though. The ODST dev team was seperate from everything else at Bungie, so all the other employees had to have been doing something.

And it ships fall 2010. Over a year from now, and three years from when Halo 3 shipped. ODST used the Halo 3 engine because 1) it's an expansion and 2) because of the really compressed development cycle (mentioned in the latest podcast).

I'd be shocked if Bungie did not use a new engine for the new game.

Game looks a lot better than I was expecting. The storytelling looks a hell of a lot better than Halo 3 already.

Seems they're taking lessons from each of the games and applying it here. Well, lessons isn't the right term. The return of health packs, fall damage and a scoped uber-powerful pistol from Halo 1. The open, night time urban combat in New Mombassa from the Halo 2 E3 demo. Overhauling the story telling after the disappointing Halo 3 story. Pretty clear who this game is aimed at. (Us.)

Yeah, Horde mode with vehicles and skulls should be really interesting.

Aye. I'm interested to see what kind of new skulls there are. Some returning are a no-brainer (Thunderstorm, Mythic), but especially in light of Firefight there's a LOT of potential to expand the set.

Second, I'm confused. I thought Bungie was getting out of the Halo business after ODST?

They said ODST would be their last bit of Halo 3 support, but they've danced around whether they were done with Halo. My money is on Reach being their final Halo project.

I think it's noteworthy that both ODST and Reach are going back and fleshing out the existing story, rather than pushing the universe forward. From Bungie's perspective, the end of Halo 3 seems to be as far along the Halo timeline as they want to explore. Halo Wars also reached back into the timeline to tell its story. I'm guessing Microsoft's new Halo Studio will be the first to tackle a post-Halo 3 game.
